6.5/10
Senior Film Conservator
A definitive 6.5/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Betty Boop's Life Guard remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you have a soft spot for the surreal, jittery world of Fleischer Studios, you’ll find Betty Boop’s Life Guard to be exactly what you’d expect—and maybe a little bit more of that 'wait, what just happened?' energy.
Betty goes to the beach, looks cute, and then decides to ride a rubber horse into the surf. It’s a total disaster, obviously. You can practically hear the animators having a blast drawing the ocean doing things water definitely doesn't do in real life. 🌊
Everything in this short is constantly moving. Even the background rocks seem like they're trying to escape the frame. It’s a stark contrast to something more grounded like Abraham Lincoln, which feels like a dusty history book by comparison.
The rubber horse scene is a highlight, mostly because the physics are entirely made up. It’s the kind of chaotic energy that reminded me a bit of the frantic pacing in Felix in the Swim, though Betty brings a whole different, specific vibe to the water.
Or maybe a sea lion? It’s hard to tell with these old designs. Regardless, the guy is huge, hunky in that bizarrely cartoonish way, and completely overcompensates for Betty’s lack of swimming skills. There’s this one sequence where the water starts acting like a living creature that just swallowed a bunch of springs. It’s deeply strange, but honestly? I couldn't look away.
It’s definitely not a deep cinematic experience, but it isn’t trying to be. If you’ve seen The Extra Girl, you know that sometimes you just need a short, punchy bit of entertainment that doesn't demand you think about 'the human condition' for ten minutes straight.
This is just Betty being Betty. It’s silly, it’s loud, and the ink lines look like they were dancing while they were being drawn. Definitely worth a watch if you’re bored and want to see how cartoons used to break reality just because they felt like it. 📽️
