Honestly, you probably shouldn't watch Beyond the Blue Horizon unless you’re really into vintage Technicolor spectacles or have a weird soft spot for trained animals. It’s the kind of movie that feels like it was filmed on a fever dream of a soundstage. If you love logic and tight plotting, you will absolutely hate this. But if you want to see a woman in a sarong hanging out with a lion, pull up a chair. 🦁
The whole thing feels like the director just let the camera roll and hoped for the best. There’s a scene where Dorothy Lamour is just wandering through the jungle, and the lighting is so bright it almost hurts your eyes. It’s got that specific, slightly artificial glow that you only get from older films. It’s not "good" in the way modern movies are good, but it has a pulse.
I found myself staring at the background extras more than the leads. They’re clearly just wandering around trying to look busy. At one point, I’m pretty sure I saw a guy trip over a fake palm tree leaf and just keep walking. Nobody even bothered to yell cut. 🌴
The pacing is all over the place. Sometimes it moves at the speed of a snail, and then suddenly, there’s a big action set piece that lasts about thirty seconds. It reminds me a bit of the frantic energy in Biff Bang Buddy, though obviously a totally different vibe. There’s no transition, just *thwack*—you’re in a new scene.
The dialogue is, well, let’s just say it’s not exactly Shakespeare. It’s filled with lines that sound like they were written on the back of a napkin five minutes before shooting started. "Stay close to me, and don't look at the monkeys!" I’m paraphrasing, but you get the point.
It’s nowhere near as cohesive as Judex, but it isn't trying to be. It’s just a weird, little island of a film. You can feel the movie trying to convince you that this jungle is dangerous, but then a parrot shows up and starts chirping in perfect English. It totally kills the tension. Honestly, it’s kind of funny.
Anyway, don't overthink it. Grab a drink, maybe turn the sound down, and just watch the pretty colors flicker for an hour. It’s not a masterpiece, but it sure isn't boring.
