Judex
Summary
A spectral avenger in a slouch hat and black domino mask glides through the gaslit corridors of 1916 France, penitent yet pitiless, settling scores with a banker whose paper empire is steeped in widows’ tears. Across twelve sinewy episodes Louis Feuillade lets the tale unspool like a rosary of cliff-hangers: a crooked tycoon fakes his own death by public execution, a corseted femme fatale called Diana Monti pirouettes across rooftops in a nun’s wimple, and a child acrobat known as the Licorice Kid cartwheels through police cordons carrying coded telegrams in his shoe. Judex—part monk, part magician—commands carrier pigeons, dream-serums, and a troupe of circus performers who camp in a ruined château rigged with trapdoors and mirrors. Yet the true battle is ethical: can vengeance coexist with mercy? The serial answers with a fever of disguises, poison rings, and last-second rescues, culminating in a lakeside duel where justice and love rise from the same ashes that consume the guilty.
