5/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 5/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Boo! remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Should you watch Boo! today? Only if you have exactly thirty minutes to kill and a deep, burning desire to hear a narrator talk over some of the most iconic moments in horror history. If you are a purist who hates when people talk during movies, avoid this like the plague. If you’re just bored and want to see how the sausage gets made with these old-school clips, you might actually have a bit of a laugh.
It’s weird, right? Taking legendary performances and just… making them the butt of a joke. Seeing Boris Karloff pop up on screen is usually a treat, but here he’s just a punching bag for a script that feels like it was written on the back of a napkin during a lunch break.
The pacing is all over the place. Sometimes the narrator shuts up just long enough for you to actually enjoy the atmosphere, but then they jump right back in with another zinger. It’s like trying to watch a spooky movie with that one friend who refuses to stop doing their bad impressions. 🙄
I couldn't help but think about how different this is from the way we handle genre history now. It’s not quite a documentary and it’s not really a parody, it’s just… noise. It reminds me of the way some people tried to repackage silent era stuff in Wir schalten um auf Hollywood, but with way more ego involved.
There is this one moment where they cut between Max Schreck and some random reaction shot, and the edit is so sharp it’s almost jarring. It’s clear they were working with whatever scraps they had lying around on the editing bay floor. Honestly, it’s charming in a 'we ran out of money' kind of way.
Specific observations from the couch:
It’s not trying to be a deep dive. It’s not trying to change the world. It’s just a weird little artifact. If you’re looking for something with the grit of Vengeance Is Mine!, look elsewhere. But if you want to watch Dracula look ridiculous while someone makes fun of his cape? Sure. Why not.
It’s imperfect, messy, and probably shouldn't exist, but here we are. Sometimes, the best movie experiences are the ones that make you go, 'Why did they even make this?' and then you keep watching anyway. 👻
