5.2/10

A definitive 5.2/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Bosko the Musketeer remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Honestly, only if you have a soft spot for the really early, scrappy days of animation. If you need a coherent plot or modern pacing, skip it. If you want to see how they drew eyes that look like tiny pie slices, you're in the right place.
Bosko is definitely a character from a different era. He spends the whole short bouncing around like he is made of rubber bands. The way his limbs just stretch and snap back into place is a little hypnotic, honestly.
The whole premise is basically just an excuse for a costume change. Honey shows him a book, and suddenly he is wearing a feathered hat and acting like he is in a period piece. It is cute, but also kind of hollow.
I caught myself staring at the background art more than the actual characters. There are these little scribbled trees and castle walls that look like they were drawn in about five seconds flat. It gives the whole thing this frantic, DIY energy that you just don't see anymore. 🎨
Sometimes the rhythm of the animation is just off. There is a moment where Bosko is supposed to be fighting, but he just kinda flails at the air while the music plays on. It is not exactly a masterpiece of choreography.
It makes me think of other old shorts like The Candy Girl or the strange, stiff vibes in The Dancing Girl of Izu. There is that same feeling that someone just wanted to put something on the screen as fast as humanly possible.
It is not trying to be a deep dive into history or anything. It is a cartoon about a guy in a hat. It is harmless, a little bit jittery, and entirely forgettable once the credits roll. Sometimes, that is actually okay.
I guess if you are into film history, you see the cracks in the ink and the messy edges of the frames. It feels real in a way that modern polished animation never will. Not better, just... different. It has that authentic, slightly crusty feel of something dug out of a dusty trunk in an attic. 🎞️
