6.2/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 6.2/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Bosko's Picture Show remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you're a animation nerd who loves digging through the dust of the 1930s, yeah, you'll probably get a kick out of this. If you need a movie to actually go somewhere or have a point, skip it. It’s less of a story and more of a variety show that someone drew in their spare time.
Bosko is just hanging around his theater, and honestly, the guy has more charisma than half the humans in Screen Snapshots, Series 9, No. 12. He’s running the projector, and the movie just sort of dissolves into a bunch of skits. It’s a bit messy, but that’s the charm, I guess.
There’s a strange energy in the way these early cartoons were put together. It feels like they were making it up as they went along, just throwing whatever gag they thought of that morning onto the celluloid. It’s not as polished as the later stuff, but it feels more… alive? Sometimes it feels like watching a fever dream that someone had after eating too much cheese.
I found myself wondering if they ever got tired of drawing the same cat over and over. Probably not. 🐈
It’s not as dramatic as Jane Eyre, obviously, but it’s not trying to be. It’s just a weird, disjointed cartoon show. You don't watch this for the plot. You watch it to see how many things they can break before the reel runs out.
I still don't know why Bosko is the one running the theater, but maybe that's the point. It's just a show. Don't overthink it.
