5.6/10

A definitive 5.6/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Bouboule 1er, roi nègre remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you're looking for a tight, modern thriller, run away. This is for the kind of person who likes digging through the archives to find movies that make you go, "Wait, they actually made this?" If you’re easily offended or looking for something that treats its setting with any real sense of gravity, you will absolutely hate this.
Georges Milton plays Bouboule with this wide-eyed, frantic energy that’s almost exhausting to watch. He’s the classic 'everyman' who is just a little too dumb to realize he’s being led to the slaughterhouse. The way he trips over his own feet while dodging hitmen is pure physical comedy, but it feels like it belongs in a different century.
The whole plot about the diamond smuggling is basically just an excuse to get our guy to Senegal. Once he gets there, the movie loses whatever internal logic it was trying to hold onto. It stops being a crime flick and just starts being a weird, rambling adventure.
I couldn't help but think about how much easier life was for characters in movies like That's My Boy, where the stakes feel at least somewhat grounded. Here, the bad guys are so cartoonishly evil that they feel like they wandered off the set of a different production entirely. 🙄
There’s this one sequence where he’s running through the village, and the extras in the background look like they’re just trying to figure out where their lunch is. It’s not exactly Construire un feu in terms of atmosphere, let's put it that way.
Honestly? It’s a mess. But it’s a charming mess if you catch it on a Sunday afternoon when you’ve got absolutely nothing else to do. It’s not trying to say anything important, and maybe that’s for the best. Sometimes you just need to watch a guy from Paris stumble his way into a crown and call it a day. 👑
