6.1/10

A definitive 6.1/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. British Agent remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you like old-school black and white dramas where everyone talks a bit too fast and wears excellent hats, you might find something to like here. If you’re looking for a tight, high-stakes spy thriller, you’re probably going to be checking your watch by the thirty-minute mark. It’s for the folks who enjoy seeing early Hollywood’s take on global history—which is to say, they mostly cared about the star-crossed lovers.
Leslie Howard is doing that thing he does where he looks perpetually worried about the world, which works for a guy trapped in revolutionary Russia. But then there’s the romance with Kay Francis. It feels like they were dropped into the middle of a war zone just so they could have a place to argue in evening wear. It’s a little distracting, honestly.
One minute we’re trying to stop the Bolsheviks from signing treaties, and the next we’re watching a conversation that feels like it belongs in a drawing-room comedy. There’s a scene where they’re plotting in a dimly lit office that goes on way too long. You can practically hear the director yelling to keep the energy up, but the actors seem like they’re waiting for the lunch bell.
The historical backdrop is used mostly for aesthetic reasons. It’s all fur coats and shouting in the streets, but you never really feel the cold or the actual danger of 1917. It feels more like a stage play that someone decided to film on a weekend.
If you enjoyed the historical flair of The Kaiser, the Beast of Berlin, you might appreciate the vibe here, even if it lacks the same punch. It’s not quite as chaotic as Radio Parade, but it has that same dated, studio-lot charm that is hard to totally hate.
Ultimately, it’s a relic. It’s not bad, but it’s definitely one of those movies you watch while folding laundry. The bits about the treaty are dull, the bits about the romance are okay, and the rest is just sort of... there. Don't expect a masterpiece. Just expect a decent way to spend a rainy afternoon if you don't mind a little cheese with your history. 🎥
