A definitive 7.6/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Broken Lullaby remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Should you watch Broken Lullaby today? Only if you are in the mood for something that moves at the speed of a funeral procession. It is quiet, heavy, and frankly, a bit of a downer. People who want action or quick dialogue will absolutely hate it. If you have the patience for a long, aching stare at the wreckage of a human heart, though, you might find it hits home.
The premise is simple: a French soldier, Paul, goes to a German town after the war. He carries a load of guilt that feels almost physical. He tracks down the parents of the guy he killed in the trenches. Instead of telling them the truth, he just… sits there. It is awkward. It is weird. And it is kind of fascinating to watch him try to inhabit a life that isn't his.
The cinematography has this hazy, ghostly quality to it. There is one scene where the father—played by Lionel Barrymore with a face that looks like a crumpled map—just stares out a window. He lingers on the frame for so long I started wondering if the projector had jammed. But then he sighs, and the whole weight of the room changes. It’s small, but it’s real.
Some random thoughts:
There is a sequence where Paul plays the violin, and honestly, the editing is just a mess. The camera cuts back and forth with no real rhythm. It feels like the director couldn't decide if we should look at his hands or his face. You can almost feel the movie trying to convince you that this moment is deeply profound. It almost works, despite the technical clunkiness.
Is it perfect? No way. Parts of it drag on for about twenty minutes too long, and the melodrama can get thick enough to cut with a knife. But there’s something about the way it handles the lie Paul tells that kept me watching. He isn't a hero. He’s a guy terrified of his own shadow.
It’s a strange little artifact. Don't expect a polished masterpiece. Just expect to feel a bit drained by the end of it. 🎻
