5/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 5/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Buddy the Gee Man remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Look, if you’re looking for a serious prison drama, keep walking. Buddy the Gee Man is for the kind of person who enjoys watching old, crackling film stock while wondering if the lead actor is actually just improvising his entire way through a jail cell.
Is it worth your time? Only if you have a soft spot for movies that feel like they were made in someone's basement during the silent era. If you’re allergic to bad audio or wooden acting, you will probably hate this with the fire of a thousand suns. 🙄
The whole thing takes place at Sing Song Prison. It’s supposed to be this high-stakes investigation, but it mostly just feels like a bunch of guys standing around waiting for the director to yell 'cut.' Billy Bletcher is in there trying his best, but the script gives him basically nothing to work with.
There's this one scene where he’s supposed to be undercover, and he walks past a guard who is clearly looking at the camera. It’s hilarious. It’s also completely distracting.
I’ve seen better prison setups in things like The Man They Could Not Hang, which at least had a bit of momentum. This? It just kind of sits there. It has the same stiff energy you find in Dancing Sweeties, just with more iron bars and less dancing.
Maybe it’s the lack of budget or just a really weird day on set, but the pacing is totally broken. One minute Buddy is having a tense standoff, and the next he’s just casually leaning against a wall like he’s waiting for a bus. It’s wildly inconsistent, but honestly? It’s kind of charming in a 'what were they thinking?' sort of way.
Don't look for deep meaning here. It’s not Liliom, and it doesn't want to be. It just wants to exist for an hour, take your attention, and evaporate into the ether of forgotten cinema history.
I stayed for the whole thing, mostly because I wanted to see if the ending would be as abrupt as the beginning. Spoiler: It was. The movie just decides it's finished, and there you go. Thanks for coming, I guess? 🤷♂️
