4.8/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 4.8/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. College Capers remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you like black-and-white comedies where people fall over for no reason, yes. If you need a plot that actually goes somewhere, look away. This is for people who want to shut their brain off and watch Harry Bailey look confused.
It’s barely a movie, really. It feels more like someone grabbed a camera and told a couple of guys to just start acting like they were in college. It’s got that slightly chaotic energy that a lot of 1920s shorts have, where the editing feels like it was done with a pair of rusty scissors.
It’s not as polished as something like The 'High Sign', which actually had some rhythm to the physical comedy. Here, the jokes just kind of… happen. They land, or they don't, and then we move to the next thing without explaining how we got there.
The pacing is totally wild. One minute they are in a library, the next they are chasing a goat or something—I honestly lost track. It reminds me a bit of the vibe in Slightly Used, where everyone is just kind of sprinting through the runtime.
There’s a bit where a hat gets stolen that is clearly the highlight of the whole thing. It’s pure silliness. It doesn't matter, but I laughed. Maybe I was just tired.
Don't look for deep meaning here. It’s just people being loud and clumsy in nice sweaters. Sometimes that’s exactly enough. 🎓
