7.1/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 7.1/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Creation remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Honestly, only if you are a total nerd for film history or really into stop-motion dinosaurs. If you are looking for a cohesive story, look elsewhere. People who want polished modern blockbusters will likely get bored within five minutes, but if you like seeing the skeleton of a movie that never was, this is your jam. 🦖
Creation isn't really a movie. It’s more like a collection of footage that survived a total production collapse. It feels like walking through a construction site where the workers just up and left for lunch in 1931 and never came back.
Ralf Harolde is in here, but don't expect a masterclass in acting. The focus is clearly on Willis H. O'Brien’s creature work, which is why we’re all here anyway. Those dinosaurs move with this jittery, organic life that you just don't get with modern CGI.
There is a scene where a prehistoric bird interacts with the crew, and the lighting shifts so drastically you’d think the sun had a stroke. It’s charming in a 'did they even have a script consultant?' kind of way.
It’s funny to compare this to something like Savitri Satyavan, which feels like a completely different universe. You can see the DNA of future monster movies everywhere in these clips.
Sometimes the film just cuts to black, or a title card pops up that explains a scene we’ll never see. It’s like reading a diary that’s missing half its pages. You have to fill in the blanks yourself, which is kind of fun if you’re in the right mood.
I found myself wondering if this would have been better or worse than Against All Odds if it had actually been finished. Probably worse, but definitely louder.
Don't try to find a message here. Don't look for character growth. Just watch the models stomp around and appreciate that someone actually spent the time to animate these things back in the day. It’s a messy, incomplete artifact that refuses to be a normal movie. I kind of respect that. 🎞️
