7/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 7/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Csibi, der Fratz remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you like old, scratchy black-and-white comedies that move at a million miles an hour, sure. If you get annoyed by people shouting over each other in German or plots that rely on 'I am actually a grown woman, not a child' tropes, you should probably skip this one. It is not exactly high art, but it has a weird, frantic energy that kept me awake.
The whole premise is just wildly uncomfortable. Csibi is trying to look younger to help her mom, and then she ends up flirting with a guy who treats her like she is ten years old. It is the kind of situation that makes you want to look at your phone, but then the screen does something so absurd you have to look back.
Franciska Gaal is basically a whirlwind. She is clearly the engine of this whole thing, running around and making faces that probably shouldn't be possible for a human being. It reminded me a bit of the manic energy in The Delightful Rogue, where everything feels like it might fly off the rails if the lead actor stops moving for even a second.
The movie is uneven, and sometimes a scene just ends abruptly because they probably ran out of film or patience. It is not like Broken Dreams where the tone is heavy and stays there. Here, the tone is whatever the actors felt like doing that Tuesday.
Watching this made me think about how much we overthink modern comedies. This movie doesn't care if the logic holds up. It just wants to get to the next gag, even if the gag makes absolutely zero sense in the context of the scene before it.
Is it a masterpiece? No. But it is definitely a trip. Just do not expect the story to make much sense by the time the credits roll. 📽️
