5.8/10
Senior Film Conservator
A definitive 5.8/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Czarna perla remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Look, if you’re into the kind of moody, dramatic stuff they were cranking out in the mid-30s, you’ll probably find something to like here. If you’re allergic to melodrama or need a movie to move at the speed of a modern blockbuster, you’re going to be bored to tears within twenty minutes.
It’s a story about a guy bringing home trouble he didn't ask for. Mostly, it’s worth watching just to see Eugeniusz Bodo carry the weight of the film on his shoulders. He’s got that specific, tired charisma that fits a guy who’s been around the world and didn’t come back with his soul intact.
The whole Tahiti narrative setup feels a bit like something you'd see in La belle marinière, though maybe a bit more desperate. The pearls are the focal point, obviously, but the real treasure is how everyone in this movie seems to be lying to everyone else. It’s exhausting just watching them.
There’s this one sequence where the gang is trying to honey-trap our main guy. It’s played so straight that it almost loops back around to being funny. You can practically see the gears grinding in the villain’s head, thinking he’s the smartest person in the room. He isn't.
Did anyone else notice the way the background extras in the tavern scenes just stand there? It’s like they were told to look busy but forgot how to move their arms. It’s charming in a weird, low-budget way.
Also, the pearls. They aren't even shot that well. They just look like white marbles in a dish. It’s a great reminder that the movie isn't really about the riches. It’s about the fact that people are inherently messy when they’re greedy.
It’s not as tight as Secret of the Blue Room, but it’s got a personality all its own. Bodo’s performance feels like he’s trying to hold the whole thing together with duct tape, and honestly? He succeeds, mostly. Don’t go in expecting a masterpiece. Go in expecting a rainy afternoon watch with a cold cup of coffee. ☕️
