6.6/10

A definitive 6.6/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. De witte remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Honestly, you either love these old-school regional dramas or you think they belong in a museum basement. If you have any patience for black-and-white classics, De Witte is a weirdly charming time capsule. If you need pacing faster than a tortoise on a coffee break, you will probably hate it within ten minutes. 🐢
It’s based on the Ernest Claes book, which basically every kid in Flanders had shoved down their throat in school. Seeing it on screen feels like stepping into a postcard that’s been left out in the rain.
Remy Angenot plays the lead, and he has this look in his eyes—you know the one. He’s constantly calculating how much trouble he can cause before the cane comes out. The movie captures that specific, frantic energy of being a kid when the world felt like it was made of rules you didn't agree with.
The teachers in this film are terrifying. I don't mean 'strict,' I mean they look like they’ve been auditioning for a horror movie their whole lives. The way they loom over the desks? It makes you want to sit up straight in your own living room.
Watching this made me think of Teasing the Soil, mostly because both films deal with the grind of farm life and the way people just... get stuck in their ways. It’s not a fun watch, but it’s a real one.
The movie doesn't care about your modern attention span. It lingers on faces. It lets arguments happen until they feel genuinely exhausting. Sometimes, a reaction shot lasts about five seconds too long, and you start wondering if the actor forgot their line or if the director just really liked the way they looked when they were confused. It’s messy.
Is it better than the flashier stuff coming out of the era? Maybe. It doesn't have the grand, sweeping ego of something like Robin Hood, but it has a local flavor that feels like a home-cooked meal that’s slightly burnt. You eat it anyway.
If you're looking for a breezy Saturday afternoon watch, look elsewhere. If you want to see what happens when a boy decides that the rules of society are just suggestions, give it a go. Just don't expect a happy ending that ties everything up with a bow. 🎞️
