6.8/10

A definitive 6.8/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Die Jugendsünde remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you have a soft spot for dusty, black-and-white rural dramas that move at the pace of a slow-moving tractor, you might actually find something to like here. If you need pacing that feels like a modern thriller or characters who do anything other than glare at each other over kitchen tables, you are going to hate this.
It’s a very specific vibe. Old-school, moody, and deeply obsessed with land ownership.
There is something about the way these older German-language films frame a farm. It’s never just a place to grow crops. It’s a fortress of secrets. Grillhofer is clearly struggling with his health, and the film leans into that physical decline in a way that feels almost uncomfortable. You really get the sense that the walls of the house are closing in on him.
Then there is Dusterer. He’s the kind of villain who doesn't need a mustache to twirl; his greed is written all over his posture. Watching him circle the farm like a vulture is honestly the most engaging part of the whole thing. He’s not subtle. But in this setting, he doesn't have to be.
I couldn't help but compare the weight of the past here to the more frantic energy in something like The Spurs of Sybil. This film is much more contained. It’s like a pressure cooker. Everything is boiling, but the lid is clamped down tight.
There’s a specific scene where Dusterer is just talking about the estate, and the lighting shifts just enough to make him look slightly sinister. It’s not fancy filmmaking, but it’s effective. It’s the kind of visual storytelling that you don't really notice until you’re halfway through the next scene and realize you’re still thinking about his shadow.
Is it a masterpiece? No. It’s a bit creaky. The story feels a bit like it’s repeating itself every twenty minutes. But there’s a genuine, grounded misery to it that feels earned. It’s not trying to impress you with high-concept drama. It just wants to show you how a secret can rot a house from the inside out.
Also, the hats. The hats are excellent. 👒
