6.5/10

A definitive 6.5/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Die letzte Fahrt der Santa Margareta remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you have a thing for old German maritime dramas, you might find some charm here. Everyone else? Probably not. It’s definitely for the type of person who likes watching 1930s sets and can ignore the fact that the ocean looks suspiciously like a studio bathtub. If you hate slow pacing or characters who make consistently bad life choices, skip it.
The whole premise is that our captain, a guy who probably just wanted a quiet paycheck, finds himself running booze. It’s not exactly Metropolis, but it tries to be serious. Maybe a bit too serious.
The boat scenes are... something. You can tell they filmed some of this in a tank. Every time the 'storm' hits, the water splashes in a way that feels very staged. It’s kind of funny if you look at it the right way. 🌊
There’s this one sequence with a capsized speedboat that goes on for way too long. The rescue attempt involves a lot of arm-waving and shouting, but the tension just isn't there. It’s like watching people act out a panic attack in slow motion.
I kept thinking about how this feels like a weird cousin to something like Days of Daring. They both have that specific 'old movie' grit, even if the scripts are totally different. Sometimes I wonder if these actors knew they were making something that would be watched decades later by someone sitting in their pajamas.
The dialogue is stiff. It feels like they were reading off cue cards held just out of frame. There’s no natural rhythm to the way they argue, just blocky, heavy sentences delivered with a lot of stern faces. ⚓
Also, the liquor smuggling plot is handled so weirdly. It’s supposed to be high-stakes, but half the time they seem more worried about the weather than the law. I guess that's the sea for you. It’s a bit of a dry watch, ironically, despite all the water.
Don't look for deep meaning here. It’s just people on a boat, making bad decisions, and getting caught in a storm. Sometimes a movie is just a movie, even when it tries to be a grand epic.
