6/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 6/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Die Welt ohne Maske remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Honestly, only if you're a massive fan of creaky, early German cinema or just really need to see what people in the 1930s thought the future of television looked like. It’s a bit of a slog for the average viewer, but if you like watching movies that feel like they're falling apart at the seams, you might get a kick out of it. If you hate black-and-white films that take themselves way too seriously while clearly running on a shoestring budget, stay far away. 📽️
The whole thing centers on this invention that just won't work, which honestly feels like a metaphor for the pacing of the first act. We spend way too much time in this cluttered lab watching guys tinker with wires. It’s not exactly The Invisible Fear when it comes to tension, that's for sure.
Once the 'accident' happens and it starts seeing through walls, the movie finally wakes up. The way they pull off the effect is hilariously basic, mostly involving just shifting camera angles and some clever-for-the-time editing, but it works in a weird way. It’s almost charming how much they push this 'future technology' angle. It reminded me a bit of the frantic energy in Up in the Air, where things are happening just because the script needs them to.
The crooks are exactly what you’d expect—lots of trench coats and squinty eyes. There’s one guy who keeps showing up in the background of scenes that I’m pretty sure was just a stagehand they forgot to tell to leave. It’s that kind of movie. 🕵️♂️
It definitely lacks the emotional punch of something like Hungry Hearts, but it’s not trying to be a drama. It’s a gadget flick. And yet, I couldn't help but notice how much the inventor looks like he hasn't slept in three weeks. Maybe that was just the actor, or maybe the production was really that grueling.
If you watch this, don't go looking for deep themes or social commentary. It’s just a weird little artifact. Sometimes it's better to just watch the mess happen than try to analyze why the crooks are so obsessed with a TV set that can see through walls. It’s a bit silly, and that's okay. Sometimes you just need a movie that doesn't pretend to be more than it is.
