A definitive 6.9/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Dragnet Girl remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Should you watch Dragnet Girl? If you like movies where people stare at each other in smoky rooms while wearing really sharp suits, then yes. If you need a fast-paced thriller with car chases and constant action, you will probably be bored out of your mind. It is a slow burn that relies entirely on how Kinuyo Tanaka moves across a room.
Honestly, the plot is just an excuse to hang out with these characters. It is not about the crime stuff at all. It is about the way the jealous girlfriend, Tokiko, smokes her cigarette like she is trying to set the air on fire. 🚬
There is this one shot in a pool hall that just goes on forever. Nobody says anything. They just lean on their cues and look tired. I loved it. It felt like I was actually sitting in that corner waiting for something to go wrong.
The cinematography is so much better than it has any right to be. Ozu knows exactly when to cut and when to just let the camera sit there. Some of the framing feels like it was ripped straight out of a modern noir, but then you remember this was filmed in 1933. It is wild.
I found myself thinking about Pagan Lady while watching this, mainly because both films deal with women who refuse to just sit quietly in the background. They are both loud in their own ways, even when they aren't speaking.
The ending felt a bit abrupt. It just stops. It is like the film ran out of film and just decided that was enough. It is strangely satisfying, though. No big speeches about redemption or changing your ways.
Also, the fashion. I cannot stress this enough. The hats! Everyone wears these tiny little hats that look like they are held on by sheer willpower. It is distracting in the best possible way. 👒
It is not a perfect movie. Sometimes the motivation for the characters shifts so fast you get whiplash. But who cares? It has soul. It is a weird little gem that I am glad I finally got around to seeing.
