6.4/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 6.4/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Dva okeana remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you like movies that feel like a dusty museum exhibit, Dva okeana is worth a look. It’s for the folks who find joy in watching old ships struggle against ice floes for minutes on end without any music swelling up to tell you how to feel. If you need a snappy pace, go watch Monkey Business instead.
The whole thing feels remarkably unpolished, which is exactly why I stuck with it. It’s not trying to be a cinematic masterpiece. It just wants to show you the ocean.
There isn’t much of a script here, and honestly, you don’t miss it. The movie works best when it stops trying to explain where they are and just lets the camera linger on the horizon. Sometimes, a boat is just a boat, and that’s enough.
I found myself wondering if anyone on that boat actually liked each other. The film doesn't really answer that. It just gives you these fleeting, awkward glances between the crew members that feel so real it’s almost uncomfortable.
It definitely isn't a tight edit. You can feel the movie dragging its feet during the third act, like it’s stuck in the same ice as the ships. But then, you get a beautiful, stark shot of a sunset over the water, and you forget you were bored a minute ago. 🌊
It’s an uneven experience, for sure. A bit of a slog. But it’s the kind of slog that leaves you thinking about the cold for a few hours after the screen goes black.
