8.1/10

A definitive 8.1/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. El conventillo de la paloma remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Look, if you have a thing for old theater-style dramedies, you might find this endearing. If you aren't into 1930s Argentine stage adaptations that feel like they're being yelled at you from the back row, steer clear. It’s a very specific vibe.
It’s essentially a neighborhood soap opera. The whole movie revolves around this one tenement building, the conventillo, where everyone is constantly in everyone else's business. Paloma arrives, and suddenly every guy in the building loses his mind. It’s predictable, sure, but there’s a certain chaotic energy to it.
The dialogue is thick with that old-fashioned local slang. You can tell this came straight from the stage. Sometimes the actors are playing to the back of the room, and the gestures are just huge. It reminded me a bit of the frantic energy in The Hoose-Gow, though obviously in a totally different setting.
There’s this one sequence where the shouting match gets so intense I had to turn my volume down. It felt less like a movie and more like I was stuck in a lobby waiting for a train that wasn't coming. Sometimes the camera just sits there, watching people pace back and forth. It’s kind of funny, honestly.
It doesn't have the grit you might find in something like Justin de Marseille, which felt way more grounded in its underworld setting. This is much more of a neighborhood brawl energy. It doesn't try to be anything other than what it is.
Honestly, I lost the plot a few times because I was too busy looking at the wall decorations. The set design feels lived-in. It’s got that specific, cluttered feel that makes you want to wash your hands after watching. Is that weird? Probably.
I wouldn't call this a masterpiece. But it’s got a pulse. It feels like a piece of history that forgot to stop being annoying. And I think that's why I didn't turn it off.
