7.1/10

A definitive 7.1/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. El día que me quieras remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you like old-school musicals where the plot matters less than the guy holding the microphone, you’re in luck. If you get bored when people stop the movie to sing for five minutes straight, maybe skip it. It’s a bit of a relic, but a mostly sweet one. 🎤
Honestly, watching Carlos Gardel is like watching someone who was born to be on a screen. He’s got this effortless way of moving that makes the rest of the cast look like they’re trying just a little too hard to catch up. He isn't just acting; he's leaning into the songs like they are the only thing keeping the movie on the rails.
The story? It’s fine. It’s the kind of thing you’ve seen in a hundred other movies, like Odds 777 where everything feels a bit more structured. But here, the structure sort of collapses under the weight of the next song, and I didn't really mind. The way he tries to balance his dad's expectations with his own life feels like it belongs in something like The Weaker Sex! (Sayest Thou!) but without the biting humor.
There is this one scene—the one where he’s dancing—that goes on for a bit longer than necessary. It’s not bad, but you can see the seams. You can almost feel the director thinking, "Okay, we need more music here, just keep the camera rolling." It’s charmingly messy.
It’s funny, I found myself thinking about Hat, Coat, and Glove halfway through, just because of how differently those older films handled their leads. Gardel doesn't need a fancy suit or a big set to command the room. He just needs a spotlight. Some of the dramatic moments between him and the dancer are just a little too heavy-handed, though. Like, we get it, you’re in love, you don’t need to look at the moon for twenty seconds of silence.
Is it a masterpiece? No. It’s just a movie that knows exactly what it wants to be. It’s not trying to win an award or change your worldview. It just wants you to listen to the music and forget about the real world for an hour or so. Sometimes, that’s exactly what you need. Even if the plot is a bit thin on the ground, the vibes are solid. 💃
