3.6/10
Senior Film Conservator
A definitive 3.6/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Exhibition Boxing Bouts remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you're a fan of boxing history or you get a kick out of watching grainy, low-budget television from the dawn of the medium, you'll dig this. If you need high-definition thrills, crisp commentary, or even a plot that lasts longer than fifteen minutes, you should probably skip it. It's essentially just guys sweating under hot studio lights in black and white. 🥊
There is something inherently lonely about these broadcasts. You can hear the floorboards creaking. Sometimes the camera operator seems to lose the fighters entirely, leaving the screen staring at a blank corner of the ring for a second too long. It’s not polished, but that’s the charm, I guess.
The 15-minute episodes feel like they are over before they even start. They jump straight into the action without any of the pre-fight pageantry we see today. No walkouts, no fancy lighting, just two guys putting on gloves and swinging.
It reminded me a bit of the frantic energy in One Week, where everything feels slightly unhinged and makeshift. Except, you know, instead of house-building comedy, it’s just guys trying not to get a black eye. It’s oddly intimate because you can hear the grunts and the thud of the gloves so clearly. The lack of music makes the whole thing feel like a crime scene video.
I found myself wondering if any of these guys went on to do anything else, or if they just went back to their day jobs after the cameras cut out. It’s hard not to compare it to the more staged, dramatic tension you find in La spirale della morte, though here the stakes feel much smaller. These are just exhibitions, after all.
It’s not going to change your life. It’s not art. But it’s a weird, quiet little piece of history that doesn't care if you're watching or not. And honestly, that’s kind of refreshing. Sometimes, you just want to watch two people trade jabs while the world outside feels loud and complicated. 📺
