5.1/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 5.1/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Fashion News remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Honestly, only if you have a thing for vintage fabric or you're a film historian who gets excited by early color processes. If you want a story, go watch The Awakening instead because there is literally zero plot here.
Fashion nerds will probably love it. People looking for actual entertainment will be bored in about three minutes.
This isn't really a movie. It's more like a filmed magazine where actresses like Jeanette Loff and Raquel Torres just... stand there.
They walk toward the camera, turn around, and walk away. That is the whole thing.
The color is the most interesting part. It’s got that weird, slightly over-saturated look where the reds almost look like they are vibrating off the screen.
It’s much brighter than what you see in something like Li Ting Lang. The skin tones are a bit orange, but it makes the dresses look incredible.
Jeanette Loff has this smile that feels like she’s been told she will be fired if she stops showing her teeth. It’s a bit much after the first two minutes.
There is one moment where a girl is holding a parasol and she looks like she doesn't quite know what it is for. She just sort of wiggles it.
The hats are the real stars. Some of them are so big I don't know how they kept their heads upright.
It feels a lot less polished than A Jazzed Honeymoon. It’s just very raw and basic.
I found myself wondering what George W. Gibson was doing behind the scenes. Was he just pointing and saying "walk over there"? Probably.
It’s a weird little time capsule. It reminds me of the random clips you find at the end of a YouTube rabbit hole at 3 AM.
There is a sequence with a floral dress that is actually stunning in a weird, grainy way. You can see the texture of the silk.
But then it just ends. No credits, no goodbye, just poof.
It’s not as fun as Collars and Cuffs, but it’s more colorful, I guess. 👗
If you're bored and want to see what people thought was cool in 1930, give it a go. Just don't expect to remember it an hour later.
It’s basically a screen saver with famous people. Pretty to look at, but nobody is home.
