6.9/10

A definitive 6.9/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Fétiche en voyage de noces remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you have any interest in how stop-motion used to be done before computers took over everything, yes, absolutely. It’s short, it’s twitchy, and it’s full of personality. But if you’re looking for a smooth, high-definition ride, you are going to hate how much this thing jumps around. 🐕
Watching this feels like finding a dusty box in an attic. It’s got that specific, slightly unsettling charm that Wladyslaw Starewicz is famous for. The way the characters move—it’s not exactly fluid, but it’s alive in a way that feels intentional.
The whole premise is just a classic setup for disaster. You start with this cute, domestic vibe on the boat, and then the storm hits. Suddenly, the frame is just pure chaos. I found myself squinting at the screen trying to figure out how they manipulated the water effects. It’s probably just bits of fabric or glass, but it works.
There’s this moment where Fétiche is just trying to hold it together while everything falls apart around him. It reminded me a little of the frantic energy in Mickey's Medicine Man, though obviously a completely different style of animation. It’s that same feeling of “how did they even keep the camera steady?”
I’ve seen some other vintage shorts like Raffles, the Amateur Cracksman, and they have that same theatrical stage-play quality. Everything feels like it’s happening inside a shoebox. In Fétiche en voyage de noces, the depth of field is so shallow that the background looks like it might just fall over at any second. It’s kind of stressful to watch, honestly.
There’s no real dialogue, obviously, just pantomime. It relies entirely on the physicality of the puppets. Sometimes the movements are so jerky it’s like watching a flipbook that’s missing half its pages. It’s not perfect. It’s barely even polished. That’s exactly why I liked it.
It’s not trying to teach you anything or change your life. It’s just a dog puppet having a bad day on a boat. And sometimes, that’s plenty. 🌊
