6/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 6/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Footsteps in the Night remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you have a soft spot for grainy, old-school British mysteries where people talk in clipped tones and everyone looks mildly suspicious, you’ll dig this. It’s not going to change your life, but it’s a breezy enough way to kill seventy minutes. If you need high-octane thrills or modern pacing, honestly? Skip it. You’ll just be checking your phone the whole time.
The whole premise is classic: man makes cool thing, bad guys want cool thing, honeymoon gets ruined. It’s got that 'oh no, we're being followed' energy that makes you want to check your own locks.
There’s something about the lighting in these old flicks. It feels like they were filming in a perpetual state of twilight. Every shadow in the hotel looks like it’s hiding a secret—or just a very poorly placed prop.
Benita Hume is doing a lot of heavy lifting here. She’s got that sharp, observant look, like she’s the only one in the room who realizes the plot is falling apart. She plays the ‘confused bride’ well, though I kept waiting for her to just grab a chair and defend herself instead of sighing at the inventor every five minutes.
It reminds me a bit of the tension in The Cat and the Fiddle, but with less music and way more anxiety about patents. It’s not as polished as the big studio stuff, but that’s the charm, right? It feels like they were just trying to get the scene done before the studio lights overheated.
One scene goes on for an eternity while someone explains the 'invention.' My eyes definitely glazed over. It’s essentially a MacGuffin that doesn't really matter, and the movie knows it. Still, they act like it’s the secret to the universe.
It’s not perfect. The pacing is a bit like a sputtering engine, fast one minute and completely stalled the next. But there’s a genuine heart to it that you just don’t get in blockbusters today. 🕵️♂️
Maybe don't watch it if you're planning a trip soon. You might start suspecting the bellhop is a mastermind.
