6/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 6/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Gado Bravo remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you have a thing for old-school European dramas or just want to see what Portugal looked like on film way back when, sure, give it a go. But if you’re looking for a tight, logical plot, you’re gonna be let down. People who hate slow-burn romances or get twitchy when the dialogue feels a bit stilted should probably skip this one. It's not exactly high-octane stuff.
The whole thing feels like it was filmed through a layer of heat haze. You’ve got Nina, the German singer, arriving in Lisbon, and honestly, her character just seems to exist to make things complicated. It’s not that the acting is bad—it’s just that nobody seems to be on the same page about how dramatic they’re supposed to be.
Garrido is the bullfighter, and he does that classic 'I’m brooding because I’m strong' look for about 80% of his screen time. There’s a specific scene in the bullring where the camera just hangs there, and you can tell the crew was really hoping for something cinematic, but it mostly just feels like a long, hot afternoon where nobody knows where to stand. 🐂
Branca is the wildcard here. She’s supposed to be the local girl, but she spends half the movie looking like she wants to be anywhere else. It reminded me a bit of the pacing issues in Conspiracy, where you’re waiting for something to snap, but it just keeps drifting.
The movie isn't trying to be deep, which is probably for the best. It’s got these weird, jagged edges where the music doesn't quite match the mood of the scene. Sometimes the transitions are so abrupt you’d think they just spliced two different reels together by accident.
It’s not exactly the same caliber of storytelling as Snow White, obviously. It’s got a grit to it that feels very specific to its time and place, even if it feels a little uneven. If you watch it for the atmosphere and ignore the messy triangle, you might actually find something to like here. Just don't expect it to make you cry or anything.
Sometimes I think old movies like this are better when you stop trying to follow the plot. Just watch the shadows move across the sand. It’s way more interesting than the romance anyway. 🎞️
