5.7/10

A definitive 5.7/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Girl in Danger remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Look, if you want a complex masterpiece, keep moving. But if you have 60 minutes and want to watch a guy chase a cursed emerald through the city, Girl in Danger is surprisingly watchable. It is the kind of movie that assumes you are already paying attention, so it drops you right into the mess with Inspector Steve Trent.
It is definitely for the crowd that likes their mystery straight up, no chaser. People who need grand character arcs or deep emotional stakes will probably hate it. It is just a job for these people, and they do it fast.
There is this moment about halfway through where the pacing just hits a wall, and honestly, it felt like the film was catching its breath right along with me. The way the characters move through these dimly lit sets, you can tell the budget wasn't exactly unlimited. It has that scrappy, low-stakes energy that reminds me a bit of the frantic vibe in The Trail of Vengeance.
The dialogue? It is mostly just people shouting facts at each other while running down hallways. Sometimes it works, sometimes it feels like they are reading off a clipboard. There is a scene where a guy walks in, delivers a line that should be earth-shattering, and then just stands there waiting for the next cue. It is awkward. I loved it.
Also, Ward Bond pops up, and he is doing that thing he does where he looks like he is the only one in the room who actually knows where the exit is. The rest of the cast is just swirling around the central plot like water down a drain. It is not high art, but it is not trying to be.
I found myself wondering if they kept the same coffee machine on set for years. Everything has that same lived-in, slightly dusty aesthetic. It lacks the polish you get in something like Sally, but that is exactly why it feels like a real movie and not a product.
Don't look for logic in the emerald's journey. It moves from pocket to pocket so fast you'll get whiplash. Just lean back and enjoy the ride. It’s barely a movie, really, but it’s a good way to kill an hour if you aren't feeling particularly intellectual today. 🕵️♂️
