5.8/10

A definitive 5.8/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Happy Polo remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
You should probably only watch Happy Polo if you are the kind of person who stays up late watching old animation reels on YouTube. It is definitely for folks who enjoy seeing things bounce around for no reason at all. If you want a plot or characters that actually have *skeletons*, you are going to be very disappointed.
The whole thing is basically just a polo match between some very stretchy animals. Since it came out in 1932, the physics are totally non-existent. The horses don't really gallop; they just sort of expand and contract like accordions while they move across the screen.
I noticed one specific horse whose legs actually disappear for about three frames during a fast turn. It is those little mistakes that make these old John Foster shorts feel so human. You can almost see the animator getting tired toward the end of the day and just deciding that 'close enough' was fine.
The mallets are the weirdest part of the whole movie. They grow and shrink depending on how much oomph the character needs for a swing. It reminds me a lot of the energy you see in Flip the Frog, but way more chaotic and less organized.
There is a guy in the crowd who is literally just a black circle with two white dots for eyes. He blinks exactly once and then never moves again for the rest of the scene. I spent way too much time wondering if he was supposed to be a bear or just a very lazy drawing. 🐴
The audio is pretty rough, even for a film this old. It has that heavy hiss that makes it sound like someone is frying bacon in the room next to you. Sometimes the music gets so loud that you can't even hear the 'bonk' sounds when the ball hits a character's head.
It is definitely not a deep masterpiece like something you'd find in Pan Tadeusz. But it isn't trying to be anything other than a distraction. It’s just seven minutes of creatures falling over each other in the dirt.
One bit that actually made me laugh out loud was when a horse used its own tail to trip an opponent. It is so stupidly simple. But it works because the animation is so bouncy and weirdly aggressive.
The ending feels very sudden, like they ran out of paper or time. The game just ends, everyone cheers for a second, and then the screen goes totally black. There is no big trophy ceremony or anything, just a 'welp, that is over' vibe.
I think I liked it more because it felt so messy and unpolished. It is like watching a rough draft that someone accidentally sent to the theaters. It has a lot of that strange 'kid energy' you find in Jubilo, Jr. where everything is just a bit too loud and frantic.
Don't go into this expecting to learn anything about the actual sport of polo. I am 100% sure the people who drew this had never actually seen a real polo match in their lives. They just knew horses were involved and that people hit a ball with a stick, so they went from there. 🤡
There’s a strange moment where a horse drinks a bucket of water and its neck swells up like a balloon. It doesn't add anything to the 'plot,' if you can call it that. It’s just there because someone thought it would look funny to draw a fat neck.
The crowd scenes feel oddly empty, like the studio could only afford to draw about ten people. They just copy and paste the same three characters over and over again in the background. If you look closely, you can see the same dog-looking thing cheering in four different spots at once.
Is it a good movie? Not really. Is it an interesting relic of a time when animators were just making up the rules as they went along? Absolutely.
I’d say it’s worth a watch if you have a short attention span and a love for grainy black-and-white chaos. Just don't expect it to make any sense. It’s mostly just noise and rubber legs. 🎺
One more thing—the way the ball moves is totally unpredictable. It flies in straight lines, then zig-zags, then just stops mid-air. It’s like the ball is its own character that refuses to follow the rules of gravity.
Anyway, it’s a fun little distraction if you’re bored. Just don't turn the volume up too high or the static will give you a headache. It’s a very loud seven minutes.
