5/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 5/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Her Bodyguard remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Look, if you have a soft spot for pre-code era romantic fluff that relies on tired tropes, sure. But if you’re looking for a tight script or anything that actually makes sense for more than five minutes, keep walking. This is for the folks who love seeing old theater sets and people acting like they’re in a high-stakes play.
It’s not exactly The Grey Vulture, but there’s a certain rhythm to how they block these scenes. It feels like everyone is standing on their marks waiting for a cue that might not actually exist.
You’ve got a sugar daddy who clearly doesn’t trust anyone. He hires a bodyguard because he’s terrified someone is going to swipe his girlfriend's necklaces or her affection. It’s heavy-handed, obviously.
The bodyguard is the type of guy who probably spent too much time standing in corners. The chemistry between him and the lead isn't exactly electric. It’s more like a low-voltage wire that occasionally sparks when someone bumps into a piece of furniture. I found myself watching the background extras more than the main duo.
I couldn't help but think of Strictly Unreliable while watching this, mainly because of how thin the premise feels. It’s like they wrote the plot on a napkin during a lunch break and just started filming. It’s not necessarily bad, just... thin.
There are moments where the movie tries to get serious about the dangers of the theater world. Those bits are usually followed by a pratfall or some weird comedic aside that kills the mood instantly. It’s like a whiplash of tone.
Honestly? It’s a bit of a relic. Some people might find it sweet, others will probably just get bored waiting for something actually surprising to happen. The way the bodyguard stares at the lead actress during the musical numbers is just uncomfortably intense. I’m not sure if that was the acting choice or just the camera guy forgetting to cut.
Whatever. It’s done now. Moving on. 🎞️
