5.4/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 5.4/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Hollywood on Parade No. A-1 remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Honestly, unless you are a total sucker for pre-code Hollywood oddities or really, really need to see what stars were eating for lunch in 1932, probably not. It’s a curiosity. A snack-sized piece of history that doesn't quite know if it wants to be a variety show or a PR campaign.
If you prefer your cinema to have a beginning, middle, and end, you’re going to hate this. It’s just a loose collection of musical numbers and stage-managed "candid" moments.
Watching this felt like stumbling onto a forgotten television channel that only plays grainy footage of people in tuxedos smiling too hard. There’s no plot to speak of, obviously. Just a parade of performers doing their thing.
The Brox Sisters are in it, and they have that specific, chirpy vocal style that sounds like it’s coming out of a tin can. It’s charming for about thirty seconds, then it just sort of sits there.
The pacing is all over the place. One minute you’re watching a dance routine that seems to go on for an eternity, and the next you’re watching a quick cut to some actor pretending to be surprised by a camera crew. It’s all very stage-managed.
I found myself zoning out during the interview segments. The dialogue is so stiff it makes a mannequin look fluid. 🤖
If you want something with actual stakes or a real story, skip this and watch Raffles, the Amateur Cracksman instead. That at least has a bit of tension to keep you awake. Even The Bridal Party in Hardanger feels like a more coherent piece of art, if you can believe that.
There is a weird vibe to these old shorts. It’s like the studio heads were trying to convince everyone that being a movie star was the most fun job on earth, even though half the people on screen look like they’d rather be literally anywhere else.
It’s not bad, necessarily. It’s just hollow. Like looking at a photo album of people you’ve never met and never will. 🎞️
