5.4/10

A definitive 5.4/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Hrdina jedné noci remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Look, if you have a soft spot for 1930s slapstick and guys running around in suits looking perpetually confused, maybe. But if you’re looking for a tight plot, turn away now. It’s the kind of movie that assumes you’ll find a guy wandering into a stranger’s villa and pretending to be someone else inherently hilarious.
If you like Vlasta Burian, you’ll probably find something to enjoy here. He’s all over the screen, doing that frantic, wide-eyed thing he does. If you aren't already sold on his brand of comedy, this isn't going to change your mind.
Florian loses his job, hops on a train to Prague, and decides he’s going to find a girl he met once. He doesn't know her name. That’s the level of logic we're dealing with here.
He ends up at a villa belonging to a movie star named Elvira. He finds a love letter, assumes it's for him—because, sure, why wouldn't it be?—and just rolls with it. It’s the sort of situation that would get you arrested in real life, but here, it’s just an excuse for doors to slam and people to yell.
The pacing is a bit all over the place. There’s a scene where he’s trying to hide, and it goes on for, I swear, ten minutes. It’s just him behind a curtain and someone else looking for a glass of water. It stops being funny and starts feeling like you’re just waiting for the next thing to happen.
Honestly, watching this feels like catching a glimpse of a different world. It’s not quite as sharp as Beginner's Luck, which had a bit more snap to the dialogue. Here, things feel a little dusty.
The whole thing feels like a stage play that someone forgot to adapt properly. It’s all contained in these rooms, and you can almost smell the old stage makeup. It’s not deep, it’s not clever, but it exists.
I found myself zoning out during the long middle section. When the movie finally reaches its conclusion, you just feel relieved that Florian stopped causing trouble. It’s a very specific type of old-school fluff. 📽️
