A definitive 4.7/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Hypnotized remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you're looking for something that feels like a fever dream from the 1930s, Hypnotized is exactly that. It's not for people who need high-stakes drama or tight pacing, but if you enjoy watching a circus guy get swindled by a guy in a cape, you'll probably get a kick out of it.
The whole thing kicks off with a simple premise: win big, get robbed, get even. It feels a bit like Phantom of the Range in how it just barrels forward without worrying about logic. The hypnotist character is a total cartoon, which is frankly the best part.
There's this one scene on the boat that goes on for way too long. The hypnotist just stares at the poor guy, and you can practically see the actor trying to remember his lines. It’s awkward, but in a way that makes me like it more. It’s human, you know? It's not polished to death like the stuff we see today.
Some of the supporting cast feels like they wandered in from Parisian Love, just filling up the background space while the main plot stumbles around. It’s messy. I really liked the costumes, though. There's something about the way they wear their hats that makes the whole world feel lived-in.
The middle act sags a bit, much like Daughters of Pleasure, where you just want them to get on with it already. But then someone trips over a suitcase or says something ridiculous, and the pace picks back up. It’s not trying to be a Darwin-level intellectual exercise, and that’s a huge relief.
If you watch it, don't overthink it. It's just a silly, dusty little relic. 🎩✨
