5.7/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 5.7/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. In the Bag remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Honestly, only if you have a soft spot for the chaotic energy of early 1930s animation. If you like your cartoons to actually make sense, stay away. This is pure, unadulterated nonsense.
It’s the kind of thing you watch when you’re bored at 2 AM and want to see how weird they could get with a pencil and some ink. The whole thing feels like a fever dream that nobody bothered to edit.
The pacing is absolutely unhinged. One minute they’re in a plane, the next they’re dealing with a desert outlaw who looks like he’s sketched out of nightmares. It reminded me a bit of the frantic energy in The Haunted House, though this one has way less structural integrity.
The background art is weirdly static while the characters bounce around like they’re vibrating. It’s charming, sure, but also kind of exhausting to look at for more than five minutes. 😵💫
There’s a specific bit where a character gets robbed, and the motion is so jerky I thought my player was glitching. It’s definitely not as smooth as later stuff, but it has that raw, unfiltered energy you just don't see anymore.
It’s not a masterpiece. It’s barely a coherent thought. But sometimes you just need to watch a guy in a cartoon get hit by a cactus for no reason. 🌵
Would I watch it again? Probably not. Am I glad I saw it? Yeah, I guess so. It’s just a weird little artifact.
