5.9/10

A definitive 5.9/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. It's a Small World remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you like old-school, fast-talking movies where people yell at each other for eighty minutes before realizing they're meant to be, then yeah, sure. It’s light. It’s breezy. It’s perfect if you just want something to play while you fold laundry or stare at the ceiling.
But if you need stakes that actually feel, well, important? Stay away. You'll probably hate it if you get annoyed by characters who act like toddlers just because they’re attracted to one another.
Spencer Tracy is the anchor here, and thank goodness for that. He plays the lawyer, Bill, with that specific kind of weary, 'I've seen it all' look he does so well. He spends most of the movie looking like he’d rather be literally anywhere else. Same, honestly.
The whole thing kicks off with a car wreck, which is the most relatable part of the movie. The town judge—played by Charles Sellon—is a total cartoon character. He’s the judge, the sheriff, and probably the guy who sweeps the floors too. It’s all very silly.
There’s this one scene in the courtroom where the judge just keeps shouting over everyone. It goes on for so long that I started wondering if the microphones were even working properly. It’s not necessarily 'good' filmmaking, but it has this weird, frantic energy that’s hard to look away from.
It’s nowhere near as polished as The Operator's Opera, but it isn't trying to be, either. It’s just a scrappy little movie from a time when they churned these out like sausages.
Is it better than watching Law of the West on a rainy Tuesday? Maybe. The bickering is sharp enough that you don't really notice the plot holes until the credits roll. And honestly? I don't care about the holes. I just liked watching Tracy try to keep a straight face while everyone else runs around like their hair is on fire.
It’s fine. Just fine. Don’t go in expecting a life-changing experience. Go in expecting to kill an hour with some people who have better wardrobes than you and way more patience for legal nonsense.
