6.2/10

A definitive 6.2/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Joint Wipers remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Honestly, only if you have a very specific interest in really old, slightly baffling musical shorts. If you are looking for actual plot or anything resembling realistic plumbing, stay far away. People who hate Vaudeville-style antics will likely find this insufferable within the first three minutes. 🎷
Joint Wipers is one of those relics that feels like it fell out of a time capsule that maybe should have stayed closed. It stars Les Reis and Artie Dunn as plumbers. I think they are plumbers? They spend about 95% of their time performing songs and dancing around instead of actually touching a pipe.
There is this moment where they are supposed to be fixing a leak, but they just sort of sway back and forth and harmonize at each other. It’s charming in a 'what on earth is happening' kind of way. It reminded me a bit of the awkward pacing in Half Holiday, where the energy just doesn't quite match what the scene needs.
The whole thing feels incredibly stagey. You can almost see the floor markings where they were told to stand. There's zero attempt to make this look like a real house. It’s just a set with some tools scattered around like props in a school play. 🛠️
I found myself wondering if they ever actually fixed the sink. They probably didn't. They were too busy hitting the high notes.
It’s nowhere near the weird intensity of The Ghosts of Yesterday, but it has its own brand of oddness. There is this one reaction shot of a homeowner that lasts way too long. The poor guy looks like he just wants them to leave so he can call a real professional.
If you enjoy stuff that feels completely detached from reality, you might get a kick out of this. It’s short, it’s loud, and it’s completely nonsensical. It’s not great cinema, but it’s certainly a thing that exists on this planet.
Things I noticed while watching:
It’s definitely not on the level of Is Everybody Happy? when it comes to musical execution, but it’s got a weird, frantic rhythm. Sometimes you just need to watch two guys pretend to be plumbers while singing their hearts out. Or, you know, maybe you don't. That’s okay too.
