6.1/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 6.1/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Krazy's Newsreel remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Look, if you’re into the weird, scribbly side of animation history, sure. It’s a total mess, but it’s a charming mess. If you want a story that actually makes sense, stay away. Far away. This is for people who think Busy Bodies is a bit too linear for their taste.
The whole thing feels like it was written on a napkin during a particularly loud lunch break. It doesn’t even try to be a movie, really. It’s just a parade of random events.
Krazy Cat is hosting this thing, and the wrestling bits? They go on for about three minutes too long. You can actually see the animators getting bored with the drawing process halfway through. The limbs start moving in ways that don't really obey physics, but that’s just the style, I guess. 🐈
There’s this one bit with a newsreel intro that looks like it was ripped from something else entirely. It’s grainy and weirdly aggressive. It reminds me of the chaotic energy you find in Our Gang Follies of 1936, just way less coherent.
It’s not trying to be a deep, cinematic masterpiece. It’s just a bunch of drawings hitting each other while someone yells over a piano score. Honestly? I kind of respect it for not trying to be more than that. It makes The Merry Widow feel like a 10-hour documentary by comparison.
If you watch this, don’t look for a plot. Just watch the ink move. It’s weird, it’s frantic, and it ends exactly when you stop caring. Which is probably the best thing you can say about it. 🎞️
