6/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 6/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. La Habanera remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you like your movies dripping with heavy, humid atmosphere and melodrama that isn't afraid to be a bit mean, you’ll probably find something here. If you prefer your pacing to be snappy or your characters to be purely likable, you might want to skip this one. It’s definitely not for everyone, but it has a weird, hypnotic pull.
Zarah Leander carries this whole thing. She has this way of looking at the camera where you feel like she’s already packed her bags, even when she’s standing right there in a fancy gown. Her character is basically trapped, and you feel that tightness in her chest throughout the movie.
The movie is obsessed with Puerto Rico, but it’s a version of it that feels like a stage set. Everything is bright and saturated. It’s almost too much. You can practically feel the sweat on the characters' foreheads, and the music—well, the music is always doing a little too much work to tell you how to feel.
Her husband is a real piece of work. He’s the kind of guy who thinks buying someone a bigger house solves a personality gap. There’s a specific scene where he just stares at her while she’s trying to exist, and it’s genuinely uncomfortable. You just want her to leave.
Comparing it to something like The Plough and the Stars feels a bit off because the vibe here is so much more calculated. It lacks that raw, messy energy.
It’s not a perfect film. Sometimes it drags, and sometimes the dialogue feels like it’s being read from a stiff, yellowed letter. But there’s something about the way it captures longing that sticks with you. You might find yourself checking your watch, but you won't turn it off. That counts for something.
It’s definitely more interesting than the standard fare, like Bimbo's Express or whatever else was playing on a double bill back then. It takes itself so seriously that it almost becomes a parody, yet I couldn't stop watching. Weird, right? 🌴
