Is this worth watching today? Only if you really like old French movies where people shout their feelings. If you want a fast thriller, you should probably skip this one. 🎞️
It’s a movie for people who like to see how cinema was trying to figure out sound in 1933. You’ll probably hate it if you can’t stand crackly audio and stagey acting.
Lucien Muratore plays Saltore, and let me tell you, that guy has a huge presence. He’s a singer, and every time he opens his mouth, it feels like the microphone is about to break.
The plot is pretty basic soap opera stuff. Saltore gets blamed for killing his wife's lover, which is a pretty rough way to start a weekend.
He gets sentenced to ten years of hard labor. Ten years! The court scene feels a bit rushed, like the judge had a dinner reservation he couldn't miss.
One thing I noticed is how the lighting in the jail scenes is actually pretty good. It’s all moody and dark, which is way more interesting than the flat lighting in the house scenes.
The wife is just... wow. She is cold. ❄️
She lets her husband go to prison just so she can cover up her own mess. It’s hard to feel bad for her when the daughter starts poking around.
The daughter is the real hero here. She’s observant in a way the police clearly weren't. 🕵️♀️
There is a scene where she finds a clue, and the camera stays on her face for way too long. It’s like the director wanted to make sure we knew she was thinking.
It reminds me a bit of the heavy drama in The Revolt, but with more singing. The music isn't exactly catchy, but it’s very of its time.
Some of the extras in the background of the club scenes look like they have no idea where they are. One guy is just staring at a lamp for no reason.
I liked the fashion, though. The hats are huge and the coats look very heavy.
The movie gets a bit better when it focuses on the daughter's discovery. It’s almost like a tiny detective movie hidden inside a big loud opera.
There’s a strange bit where a character walks through a door and the sound just cuts out for a second. Probably a mistake in the old film strip, but it made me jump.
If you’ve seen The Invisible Ray, you know how these old movies can feel a bit stiff. This one is definitely stiff, but in a charming, theatrical way.
The ending is a bit of a whirlwind. Everything gets solved so fast you might blink and miss the resolution.
It’s not a masterpiece, but it’s a decent way to spend ninety minutes if you’re feeling nostalgic. Just don't expect it to make total sense all the time. 🤷♂️
I think I liked it more than Just for Tonight, mostly because the stakes felt higher. Even if the singing was a bit much for my ears today.
Final thought: check out the hats. Seriously. They are the best part of the whole production.
