7.4/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 7.4/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Lady for a Day remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you're in the mood for something that feels like a warm blanket but still has a bit of a sharp edge, Lady for a Day is a gem. It’s perfect for people who like their stories about underdogs and weirdos.
If you need modern pacing or get hives from movies that lean into being sweet, you’ll probably find the whole thing a bit grating. Just skip it and go watch The Night Court instead.
There’s this scene early on where May Robson as Apple Annie just looks so tired. Not like a movie star playing tired, but like someone who has actually been standing on a corner selling bruised fruit for twenty years. It hits different.
Frank Capra really knew how to build a world where the street-level scum and the high-society types eventually crash into each other. It shouldn't work, but it does.
It gets a little silly toward the end. You have to suspend your disbelief so high it’s basically in orbit. But honestly? I didn't care.
The movie is funny, then it’s sad, then it’s just kind of lovely. It doesn’t try to be profound, which is exactly why it sticks with you. Sometimes you just want to see a bunch of gangsters playing dress-up for a good cause. 🍎
