8.8/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 8.8/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Last Kiss remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Honestly, it depends on how much you enjoy watching people argue. If you like quiet, slightly jagged family dynamics, you’ll probably dig it. If you need a movie to be slick and polished, or if you’re looking for a clear 'hero' to root for, you’re gonna have a bad time. It’s not for everyone, and it definitely doesn't try to be.
The whole thing feels like a collection of bad Sunday dinners stretched out over ninety minutes. There's this tension between the characters that starts off simmering and just stays there. It never quite boils over into something grand, which is both its biggest strength and its most annoying trait. It just sits there.
It reminded me a bit of the claustrophobia you see in Noisy Neighbors. That same sense that the walls are closing in, except here, the walls are just covered in fading wallpaper and secrets. It’s not necessarily profound, but it’s real enough to be uncomfortable.
There is this one moment where someone drops a glass, and nobody cleans it up for like, three full minutes of screen time. It’s just sitting there on the floor, glittering, while everyone keeps yelling. I kept staring at the shards. It was distracting, but maybe that was the point? Or maybe they just forgot to have someone pick it up. 🤷♂️
It’s not as polished as The Dawn Patrol, obviously. It feels more like a home movie that got a budget upgrade by mistake. You can feel the edges of the set, and sometimes the actors look at the furniture like they're trying to remember why they’re standing next to it.
Ultimately—wait, I promised myself I wouldn't use that word. Let's just say the movie ends exactly where you expect it to. It doesn't offer any big answers. Just a lot of heavy sighs and a couple of doors slamming shut. It’s a bit of a slog, but there's a weird charm to how tired everyone looks by the end. 🎥
