6.8/10

A definitive 6.8/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Le petit café remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Should you actually watch this old thing today? Yes, but only if you love Maurice Chevalier or have a weird obsession with early 1930s French fluff. If you can't stand creaky audio and actors who look like they are shouting at a microphone hidden in a flower pot, you will absolutely hate it. 🌸
Le petit café is the French twin to Playboy of Paris. Back then, studios actually shot entirely different versions of movies for different countries instead of just dubbing them. Maurice stayed on for both because, honestly, who else could do that famous lower-lip pout?
The story is incredibly thin. Maurice plays Albert, a happy waiter who inherits a massive pile of money. But there is a catch.
His greedy boss makes him sign a contract before he hears about the inheritance. If Albert quits, he has to pay a huge fine. So, he decides to keep working but tries to make his boss fire him instead. ☕
It is basically a sitcom episode stretched out. The whole thing feels very much like a stage play where the camera just sits there and watches. Sometimes the silence between lines goes on for so long you wonder if someone forgot their words.
It is not a heavy drama like Broadway Rose, and it definitely does not have the fast energy of The Cyclone. The movie have a very slow, theatrical rhythm that might bore modern audiences to tears.
But there is a sweetness here that is hard to find now. The songs are very catchy, even if they sound like they were recorded inside a rusty tin can. 📻
I found myself humming the main tune while making dinner later. That has to count for something, right?
The romance feels very rushed. Tania Fédor is pretty, but she has the personality of a wet cardboard box in this one. She just stands there waiting for Maurice to finish being charming.
Also, the ending is incredibly abrupt. One minute everything is a mess, and the next, the movie just decides it is over. It is like they ran out of film and just went home. 🤷♂️
If you want a moody classic like Rain, go watch that instead. This is purely for people who want to turn their brains off and look at 1930s Paris through a very dusty lens.
It is a silly, imperfect little slice of history. I kind of loved it for exactly what it was.
