5.4/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 5.4/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Maid for a Day remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Honestly, only if you have a soft spot for the kind of melodrama that feels like it was written on the back of a napkin in a busy diner. If you want high-stakes tension or gritty realism, look elsewhere. People who love old Broadway tropes and don't mind a bit of clunky dialogue will get a kick out of it.
If you hate movies where the main conflict could be solved by just talking like a normal person for five minutes, stay away. It’s a frustrating watch if you’re looking for logic.
So, a Broadway actress thinks, "Hey, I'll become a maid to learn how to play a maid." It’s the kind of logic that only makes sense in a script. She’s running around scrubbing floors while her son is trying to break into the very industry she’s trying to protect him from. It’s all a bit messy.
The scenes where she tries to hide her identity are painfully obvious. You’re just sitting there waiting for the other shoe to drop, but the shoe stays in the air for way too long. It reminds me of the pacing in The Woman in 47 where things just sort of happen because they need to, not because they’re earned.
There is this one moment in the kitchen that feels like it lasts for an eternity. The camera just stares at her while she holds a rag, looking pensive. It’s not deep, it’s just quiet. I caught myself checking my phone, which is never a great sign.
Watching this made me think about Going Hollywood. At least that one had a bit more spark. Here, everything feels very contained, almost like the actors are afraid to walk too far away from the set lights.
The son’s character is just... there. He’s essentially a plot device with a haircut. He stomps around, looks moody, and you just want someone to tell him to go sit in the corner. 🙄
Maybe it’s not meant to be analyzed this hard. It’s just a fluff piece from a different era. But goodness, the silence is loud sometimes. It’s not bad, just kind of... there. Take it or leave it, I suppose.
