5.9/10

A definitive 5.9/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Mickey's Rescue remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you like old black-and-white shorts from the era where everyone spoke a little too loudly and ran everywhere, you’ll probably get a kick out of this. It’s definitely for people who enjoy the history of early cinema more than a tight script. If you’re looking for something that actually makes sense or has a steady pace, you’ll hate it. The whole thing feels like it’s vibrating at a high frequency.
There’s this weird sense of urgency from the start. Mickey and his gang aren't just looking for his brother; they are basically invading the city. It’s a total mess of a rescue mission, and honestly, the wealthy couple probably just wanted a quiet birthday.
I noticed that Hattie McDaniel is in this, which is always a treat to spot. Even in such a quick, messy short, she has a way of grounding the scene. It’s a bit of a shame she’s stuck in such a frantic setup, but that’s the nature of these things.
The city scenes are wild. It feels like they just let the cameras roll on a busy street and hoped for the best. Sometimes the background extras are staring right at the lens. It's honestly hilarious.
It reminds me a bit of the frantic energy in Brownie's Busy Day, where you just sort of accept that the characters have zero chill. None of them take a breath.
One shot of the kids crossing the street lasts about three seconds too long, and you can tell they were struggling to keep the group together. It’s messy, but that’s the charm. It’s not like On Trial where things are carefully blocked and lit. This is just pure, unpolished movement.
The ending comes out of nowhere. It’s like they just ran out of film and decided to wrap it up with a quick hug and call it a day. I don’t think they even bothered to resolve the whole 'wealthy couple' tension properly. They just sort of… left. It’s funny in a way that feels totally unintentional.
Anyway, it’s a short. It’s not meant to be analyzed for weeks. It’s just a weird, loud, and incredibly fast-paced relic. Don't overthink it. Just watch the kids run. 🏃♂️
