6.6/10

A definitive 6.6/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Mickey's Touchdown remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Honestly, only if you're a completist for these vintage shorts or just really, really miss the days of grainy film stock and kids in oversized sweaters. If you’re looking for a tight story or anything resembling modern pacing, you’re gonna be bored within five minutes. It’s basically a time capsule for people who think childhood was just falling down and yelling at each other.
Mickey Rooney is there, doing his thing, which is mostly just looking determined while standing in a dirt lot. The whole vibe is less 'sports drama' and more 'neighborhood kids causing a ruckus.' It feels like a precursor to the chaos you see in something like En rackarunge, just with more footballs and less Swedish drama.
Stinky Davis is exactly the kind of cartoonish villain you expect from this era. He’s got that sneer down pat. Every time he hatches a scheme, you can practically hear the director yelling, 'Okay, now look evil!' It’s not subtle, but it’s kind of endearing in its own clunky way. 🏈
The football scenes are... well, they're not exactly NFL quality. Most of the time it looks like they’re just tackling the grass. There’s this one sequence where the gang is trying to practice and the ball keeps disappearing—it’s like the editor just gave up halfway through the cut. It feels slightly less polished than the war documentation seen in Allies' Official War Review, No. 7, but then again, that's a different beast entirely.
There isn't much to say about the 'performances' other than these kids are clearly having a blast. They’re running around like their lives depend on this game. It lacks the grit of something like State's Attorney, but it’s not trying to be a drama. It’s just kids in a yard.
I caught myself looking at the background extras more than the main cast. Someone is clearly trying not to laugh in the corner during the 'climax' of the game. It’s those little cracks in the facade that make these old shorts worth watching, honestly. Just don't go in expecting a touchdown-worthy film.
