5.7/10

A definitive 5.7/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Mister Dynamite remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you have about an hour to kill and you really like the sound of 1930s actors talking at 100 miles per hour, then Mister Dynamite is worth a look. It is not exactly a masterpiece, but it is a fun enough time for anyone who likes those old-school 'whodunnit' movies where everyone has a drink in their hand.
You should probably skip this if you need a plot that actually makes sense on the first try. It gets a bit messy halfway through.
The movie stars Edmund Lowe as T.N. Thompson. They call him Dynamite because he is supposed to be explosive or something, I guess? He has this thin mustache that looks like it was drawn on with a very steady hand.
He is a private eye who gets called into a casino to solve a murder. The owner of the place is played by Victor Varconi, who looks like he is constantly worried about his taxes.
Honestly, the best thing about this whole movie is Jean Dixon. She plays his secretary, and she has this incredibly dry, bored voice that makes every scene better.
She keeps him grounded while he is running around acting like he is the smartest man in the room. There is one scene where she is just sitting there with a look on her face that says, "I cannot believe I work for this guy," and it felt very relatable.
I wish the movie was just about her, to be honest. She has way more personality than the actual detective.
The way she delivers her lines is so fast. You have to really pay attention or you will miss the jokes.
The set for the casino is pretty cool, though it feels a bit small. Like they only had enough budget for three tables and a fancy door.
There is this moment where a guy gets shot, and the reaction from the crowd is so weirdly delayed. Everyone just kind of stands there for a second before they remember they are supposed to be panicked.
It reminded me a bit of the awkward pacing in Berth Marks, where the silence is part of the joke, but here it just feels like a mistake in the editing.
The lighting is very shadowy and moody, which I liked. It hides the fact that the sets are probably just painted cardboard in some spots.
This is based on a story by Dashiell Hammett, who wrote The Thin Man. You can tell the writers were trying to capture that same snappy energy.
But it does not quite get there. It feels a bit like a knock-off version of a better movie, maybe something like Vagabond Lady but with more dead bodies.
The mystery itself is... fine? I did not guess who the killer was, but only because the clues are kind of thrown at you in a big pile at the end.
I caught myself looking at the background actors more than the main plot. There is a guy in the back of the casino scene who looks exactly like my uncle.
I noticed a weird continuity error where a glass of water moves across a table between shots. It is the kind of thing you only see if you are looking too closely, but now I can't unsee it.
The movie is only 69 minutes long. That is the perfect length for a movie that doesn't have much to say.
It is way better than some of the other stuff from that era, like The Scuttlers, which just drags on forever. At least Mister Dynamite keeps moving.
There is a scene near the end where the detective explains everything. He talks so fast I had to rewind it once just to hear the name of the killer.
It feels like they were in a rush to finish the scene so they could go to lunch. I don't blame them.
Is it a classic? No. Is it a good way to spend an hour on a rainy Sunday? Yeah, sure.
It has that specific 1930s charm where everything feels a bit theatrical and silly. Even the murder feels sort of polite.
I think if you like Jean Dixon, you have to see it. She is the real star here, even if her name isn't the one in the title.
I am going to give it a pass just for the dialogue. It is sharp, even if the plot is a bit blunt.
Just don't expect it to change your life or anything. It is just a movie about a guy with a funny name solving a crime in a small casino. 🎲
