Should you watch Moderne Mitgift today? If you have a soft spot for grainy, old-school European comedies from the thirties, sure. Go for it. If you need pacing that doesn't feel like a lazy afternoon in a deck chair, you’re going to hate it. It’s basically a wedding trip that goes sideways because of a necklace, and honestly, the necklace is the least interesting thing happening on that boat.
The whole thing feels like it was filmed in a frantic weekend. The characters are constantly rushing around the decks, and the dialogue has this staccato rhythm that takes a minute to get used to. It's not high art. It's just people shouting about pearls while a band plays in the background.
There's this one moment where Leo Slezak just dominates the frame, and you can tell he's the only one who knows exactly how ridiculous the script is. He’s got this heavy, looming presence that makes the rest of the cast look like they’re trying too hard to be cute. It’s almost distracting.
I found myself zoning out during the scenes with the engineers. They talk about work and logistics, but the movie clearly wants to be a rom-com and keeps dragging them back into goofy misunderstandings. It’s a bit of a tug-of-war that nobody wins.
The ship setting is classic, obviously. It reminds me of the chaotic energy you see in The Charming Deceiver, though this one feels a bit more claustrophobic. Everyone is stuck in these tiny rooms, and the camera barely has space to breathe. Maybe that’s the point? It feels like everyone is on top of each other.
It’s not as polished as A Gentleman's Agreement, but it has a messy, human quality that you don't get in modern, sterile comedies. It’s a bit of a shrug, really. Not something you’ll remember in a week, but it’s a decent way to kill an hour if you like seeing people in suits running around on boats. 🚢
Also, the ending. I won't spoil it, but it just sort of stops. Like the film reel ran out or the director just decided they were done for the day. I kind of respect that. No big, swelling music. No grand resolution. Just done. 🤷♂️
