7.7/10

A definitive 7.7/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Mya ga naing remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Honestly, you probably only want to watch Mya Ga Naing if you have a massive soft spot for older cinema or if you are specifically digging into the history of Burmese film. If you need pacing or a plot that moves like a modern thriller, you’re going to be frustrated. This isn't exactly Rio Rita in terms of polish, but it has a strange, dusty heart to it.
The whole thing feels like it was filmed in a different century—which, well, it kind of was. Maung Tin Maung carries the screen with this kind of quiet intensity that makes you wonder if he’s actually acting or just staring at a bird off-camera. 🐦
There’s this one sequence in the brush where the foliage looks like it’s about to swallow the actors whole. It reminded me a bit of the suffocating, quiet dread in The Trap, even if the stakes here feel a little more local and grounded. You can practically smell the humidity through the screen.
The accident scene? It happens so fast you almost miss the point of it. One minute they’re walking through the timber yard, and the next, there’s a commotion that doesn't quite look as dangerous as the characters claim. It’s charmingly low-budget. 🪵
There’s a weird lack of urgency in the middle of the film. It feels like the characters just stopped to hang out in the jungle for a bit. It doesn't have the manic energy of Angora Love, but it’s not trying to be a comedy either. It’s just... there. Hanging out in the trees.
I found myself staring at the background extras more than the leads. There’s a guy in the back of the village scene who is clearly trying not to laugh at something happening off-screen. Once you see him, you can’t look away. Classic.
It’s not a masterpiece, and it’s definitely not for everyone. But for what it is, it’s a quiet little trip into the past. Don’t go in expecting bells and whistles. Just expect a lot of trees and a very determined rescue mission.
