6.8/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 6.8/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. No Blood Relation remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you have a soft spot for old-school melodrama that feels like it was filmed in a fever dream, you might get something out of No Blood Relation. It’s definitely not for anyone who needs their protagonists to be likable or their plots to follow a straight line. If you go in looking for a warm reunion, you’re going to be disappointed. If you want to watch people make bad decisions for 90 minutes, pull up a chair.
The whole thing feels a bit like watching a car crash in slow motion, but with nicer outfits. It’s got that weird, stiff energy you find in movies like The Voice of Love where everything is just a little bit too intense for its own good. 🎭
There’s this moment where our lead actress just stares out a window in Tokyo, and it goes on for, I don’t know, an eternity? It felt like the editor just fell asleep at the desk, but then it actually started to feel kind of heavy. I liked it, even if it made no sense.
Her brother is a classic tough guy, the kind who probably hasn't smiled since 1945. Watching him try to navigate the domestic drama is like watching a bull in a tea shop. It’s awkward, it’s loud, and it’s deeply uncomfortable.
I couldn't help but think of The Fighting Hope while watching the legal-ish custody nonsense play out. People talk past each other constantly. It’s brilliant, really. Nobody is actually listening to anyone else. They’re just waiting for their turn to speak their piece.
The ending is… abrupt. It just stops. It doesn't wrap up with a pretty bow or a dramatic sunset. It’s like the film just ran out of tape or patience. Honestly? I kind of respect that. Too many movies try to explain why you should feel sad or angry. This one just shows you the mess and leaves you to clean it up.
It’s flawed. It’s messy. It’s barely holding itself together. But it’s definitely not boring, which is more than I can say for half the stuff I see these days. Give it a watch if you're in the mood for something that leaves a bit of a stain. 🍷
