If you have about seven minutes and a soft spot for animation history, sure. It’s not exactly a complex narrative masterpiece, but it’s a neat little time capsule. If you hate slapstick or get annoyed by high-pitched voices, steer clear. Seriously, the noise levels are off the charts.
The whole thing feels like a talent show gone wrong, or maybe just right depending on your tolerance for pain. Mickey is the host, trying his best to keep things moving while a literal army of tiny orphans wreaks havoc in the theater. He’s surprisingly patient, considering he’s dealing with what looks like a few hundred mice throwing things at the stage.
We need to talk about Donald Duck. He’s here to recite poetry, which is obviously a terrible idea. The orphans start pelting him with everything from rotten fruit to heavy bricks, and it just keeps going. The scene lasts way longer than you’d expect. At one point, I thought, 'Okay, he’s definitely going to stop reciting now,' but he just keeps trucking through the verses while getting pelted. It’s kind of funny, but mostly just weirdly violent for a cartoon about orphans.
Watching this reminded me a bit of the frantic energy in The Book Worm, where things move at a pace that feels like it’s trying to outrun its own budget. There’s no downtime. Just act after act, slapstick after slapstick.
It’s not as polished as later Disney stuff, but it’s got charm. Sometimes the animation jitters a little, and you can see the effort put into the stage lighting effects. It’s not quite as weird as Elysia (Valley of the Nude), obviously, but it’s got a weird energy of its own. Just a group of cartoon animals trying to be nice and getting absolutely wrecked by their own audience. 🐭🎭
Anyway, I liked the part where the piano gets destroyed. Or maybe I just liked that the show eventually ended. It’s fine. Just don't expect a deep plot.
